Invasive Species GIS Program

In 2022, HIP launched an invasive species geographic information system (GIS) project to track invasive species surveys, species disbursement, and treatment throughout the county. The system was built via collaboration among HIP partners with support from the Hamilton County GIS department.

The program is intended for us by trained partner staff, trained partner volunteers, trained HIP volunteers, and contractors (approved by partner staff).  Each partner organization has a primary contact for the project that controls data accuracy and validation as well as training for their staff and volunteers.   For more information or access to the platform reach out the hcinvasives@hamiltoncounty.in.gov.

The survey information is accessible to the public using the portal below.

Project background
The county wide invasive species mapping platform was created in 2022 through the collaboration of Hamilton County Invasives Partnership members and the Hamilton County GIS Department. The platform was adapted from a system originally created by Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation and the City of Carmel GIS Department.

The goals of creating a county wide GIS invasives system were to track and monitor invasive species locations throughout the county and track and monitor efficacy of treatment methods.

Other goals:
• ID species present, their location and density
• Monitor spread mechanisms and pathways as well as treatment progress
• Early detection and rapid response
• Centralized database
• Provide a robust tracking tool to departments or organizations who do not have the resources
to develop their own
• ID successful and unsuccessful control tactics, collaborate to inform management decisions,
drive strategic invasive species management plants
• Use data and partnership to secure funding
• Use maps to educate and communicate
